Introduction to Debating

There are two key types of debating used by the Society. The Junior Society largely uses the Mace style of debating, while both the Middle and Senior Societies generally use the BP (British Parliamentary) format for debating. The guides on this page are aimed at teaching students the basics of BP, as well as giving some more in-depth ideas for those who wish to explore this further.

We are also beginning to put together a reading list for those who would like to expand their knowledge and understanding of some of the more common areas that emerge in the debates that we use: this is a work-in-progess at the moment! Please feel free to pass on any suggestions to Nick Humphries, President, Toby Messervy-Whiting or Laura Curtis, Consuls, Laurence James, Chairman, or Miss Jane Waller, Head of Debating.
