The Middle Society

The Middle Debating Society is aimed at students in Year 9-10, as well as more experienced debaters from Year 8. The Society meets on a Tuesday lunchtime between 1.30pm and 2.15pm. With around 25-30 members, the Society carries out a mixture of activities, focusing mainly on the BP (British Parliamentary) style of debating: more details of this can be found under Introduction to Debating. Some weeks, the Society looks at the skills needed for this but the emphasis is on practising these skills through lunchtime BP debates. Debaters from the Senior Society regularly chair these debates, giving feedback and mentoring the Years 9-10.

The Society welcomes all students who would like to come along - no previous experience is necessary!

There are currently very few competitions aimed at Middle debaters but the Society is beginning to prepare for the key date - the International Competition for Young Debaters in the Lent term. In 2016-17, Max Houchin and Zain Baig were one of only 32 pairs from the UK to qualify for the national finals at Cambridge University. We also undertake local fixtures against King's, plus there are House Debating competitions in February/March.

For further information, please contact Mr Richard Hawking, Head of Middle Debating, or Miss Jane Waller, Head of Debating. Amber Warner-Warr is the current President of the Middle Society
